Bone Grafting

Bone grafting is a procedure that helps restore or preserve jawbone that has been lost due to missing teeth, gum disease, injury, or other dental conditions. A healthy jawbone provides the foundation needed to support dental implants and maintain the natural shape of your smile.

When teeth are missing, the surrounding bone can gradually shrink over time. Bone grafting allows us to rebuild areas where additional bone support is needed, creating a stronger foundation for future dental treatment. Depending on your individual needs, grafting material may come from your own body, a donor source, or specially processed materials designed to safely support new bone growth.

Bone grafting can range from minor procedures that preserve bone after a tooth extraction to more advanced treatments that rebuild larger areas of the jaw. In some cases, specialized techniques such as sinus grafting or regenerative membranes may be used to encourage the body’s natural healing process and promote healthy bone development.

Our oral surgeons will evaluate your unique situation and recommend the most appropriate treatment option to help ensure long-term function, stability, and a healthy, confident smile.

Bone Grafting is a process that assists your body in regenerating lost bone. Over time, techniques and materials have steadily improved, limiting the need of use bone taken from another part of your body.

The goal is to regenerate new bone for the placement of implants, increase the life expectancy of teeth, or the preservation of the alveolar ridge height and width.

Additional potential benefits may include:

  • Growth of new bone to restore lost bone
  • Creation of a suitable environment for implant placement
  • Socket Grafting
  • Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR)
  • Guided Tissue Regeneration (GTR)
  • Sinus Augmentation

Why do I need bone grafting?

Bone Grafting is used to prepare a site for dental implants that are needed to replace a missing tooth or teeth. Bone, in an area where teeth have been lost, naturally shrinks or resorbs over time, both in height and width. As a result, new bone must be grafted to create a secure site for placing implants and to achieve aesthetic results. Bone Grafting can also be used to save teeth that have experienced bone loss resulting from gum disease.

Bone loss can be caused by:

  • The loss of a tooth
  • Localized infection
  • Gum disease
  • Trauma

What can I expect from a bone grafting procedure?

Prior to your procedure, your doctor will go over any pre-operative instructions you should follow, as well as any specifics about the surgical process.

  1. A local anesthetic is applied to the grafting site.
  2. A small wide opening is made in the area where bone is needed.
  3. The grafting material is gently places within the grafting site, alongside the existing bone, and stabilized with a protective covering.
  4. The area is sutured. Stitches will either dissolve or be removed by your doctor in 7 to 10 days.
  5. Allow approximately 3 to 6 months for healing.

Where does grafted bone come from?

For years, the bone needed for a Bone Grafting procedure had to be taken from another part of your jaw or body, requiring additional surgery. Today, bone grafting materials such as Puros® Allografts may be used in place of your own bone, with no additional surgery required. During the healing process the graft material is intended to act as a scaffold and be replaced by your own new bone.

What are Puros Allografts?

Puros Allografts are bone grafting materials made from donated bone particles that have been refined through the proprietary, multistep Tutoplast sterilization process. This process assures the highest standard of safety and quality with minimal risk of disease transmission. The result is safe,
biocompatible grafting material. For over 50 years, Tutoplast-processed grafts have been safely used in more than eight million procedures.

How can I reduce the risk of bone loss in the future?

The risk of bone loss can be reduced by replacing lost teeth quickly, before significant bone loss occurs. If you’re not ready for dental implants at the time that your teeth are lost or removed, your doctor may recommend a Ridge Preservation procedure to maintain the bone in that area until your implants can be placed.
